A discovery in Ethiopia?of 3-million-year old foot bones that once belonged to a human relative suggests that human bipedalism evolved more than once.?
Lucy, it turns out, had company ? another prehuman that also walked but spent more of its time in trees.
Skip to next paragraph A few million years ago, our ancestors stopped climbing trees and started walking upright, on two feet. To work out how and when this happened, researchers look for fossils -- and recently they found a surprising set of foot bones in Ethiopia. The foot is about 3.4 million years old, making it roughly the same age as 'Lucy' and her species, Australopithecus afarensis. But while Lucy's species had feet much like modern humans, the new foot has an opposable big toe, like a chimp. So do the foot bones represent a new species of hominin? Watch the video and decide.Until now, there was no proof of another human relative living around the same time as the species made famous by the Lucy skeleton. But a fossil discovery reveals there was another creature around 3 million years ago and it gives new insight into the evolution of a key human trait ? walking on two legs.
The creature came to light when an international team of researchers unearthed a partial foot in eastern Africa. Like Lucy, it walked upright, but had a grasping foot that it used to climb tree branches. Scientists said it's now clear that various human relatives experimented with upright walking.
"This is just another window into solving the problem of how we got from a primitive foot to the modern human foot," said Bruce Latimer of Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University, who helped discover the fossil remains.
Various hominin species have co-existed throughout human evolutionary history, but this is the first sign of another during Lucy's time.
So what was this tree-climbing and ground-dwelling creature? Scientists don't yet know because no skull or teeth have been recovered to make a determination. But it's clear the foot did not come from Lucy's species, Australopithecus afarensis.
It's rare to find prehuman feet because bones are fragile and don't preserve well. So American and Ethiopian scientists led by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were excited when they excavated eight foot and toe bones in 2009 in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia, 30 miles north of where Lucy was discovered in 1974.
By analyzing the bone structure and dating the surrounding dirt, the team concluded the fragments came from the right forefoot of a human relative that lived 3.4 million years ago. While Lucy had humanlike feet, this creature was less advanced.
The discovery was detailed in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. The authors did not name the new species because they know so little about it.

Voice control wouldn't be practical in all situations, but it could be enormously helpful for certain operations, like adjusting settings or reviewing images. MONDAY, March 26 (HealthDay News) ? Women should be screened for heart disease ? a leading cause of death among women in the United States ? during routine visits to obstetrics and gynecology clinics, a new study suggests.
Researchers from Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City found that heart screenings performed during visits to obstetrician/gynecologists could help identify women with undetected risk factors for the condition. In addition, the screenings could significantly increase awareness among women about heart disease prevention and treatment, the researchers added.
?There is a real disparity in the medical community where we tend to think heart disease is a disease of men, and historically we have not done a very good job of screening women for cardiovascular risk factors,? the study?s principal investigator, Dr. Roxana Mehran, director of interventional cardiovascular research and clinical trials at Mount Sinai Medical Center, said in a news release from the American College of Cardiology.

She proceeds to become a STAR as audiences embrace TALKIES and JEAN acts like a WHINY BITCH ABOUT IT. JOHN consoles him with ANGER.

No, there?s something inherently more artistic to silent films, and in no way was it merely an unfortunate technical limitation forced upon filmmakers at the time!

That night, he has a NIGHTMARE in which he can hear phones ringing because IT?S 2011 AND WE GOTTA HAVE SOME NONSENSICAL META BULLSHIT.
INT. JEAN?S HOUSE
JEAN becomes depressed at his unwillingness to fix his own career.? His driver, JAMES CROMWELL, does lots of stuff other than DRIVING for him.
JAMES CROMWELL
Jean, it?s been over a year since you paid me, so?
JEAN fires him charmingly. JAMES is sullenly accepting of this.
JAMES CROMWELL
Wow, I?m fired?? Well, I assume you?ll at least pay me for the year that you owe me, right?
JEAN shakes his head charmingly.? JAMES leaves.?
JEAN, depressed, decides to set all of his highly flammable?films on fire in the middle of his flammable bedroom rug.? Amazingly, this quickly turns out to be a BAD IDEA.

Oh no, I?d have known film was extremely flammable if I?d only watched Inglourious Basterds!
JEAN passes out.? His DOG finds a POLICEMAN to help.
POLICEMAN
What?s that, boy?? This scene strains credulity even in consideration of the rest of the film?
The DOG barks and, frankly, shows an awful lot of PENIS.
POLICEMAN
Jean Dujardin set his films on fire?? Oh, well there?s no hurry then, I?m sure the extremely toxic gas that burning film produces would have killed him by now.? I?ll go and help move his corpose, I guess.
The POLICEMAN discovers JEAN, still alive, and takes him to the hospital.? B?R?NICE finds out and rushes to see him.

CHICAGO (AP) ? The tug of war between activists planning to rally during the NATO Summit in Chicago and a new mayor determined to keep order in a city with a checkered past of protests has come down to a parade route.
After long insisting there would be enough police to keep order during the gathering of U.S. and European leaders in May, city officials now say there won't be enough officers to watch a large march along the requested route. The claim has raised eyebrows because officials, all the way up to President Barack Obama, expressed confidence in Chicago's ability to handle the summit ? and the thousands of expected protesters.
It is the latest chapter in a dispute between Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who was granted extraordinary powers to maintain order during the two-day event, and activists intent on portraying him as an enemy of free speech as they harken back to the city's less than flattering history of quashing protests.
On Tuesday, a group of activists will appeal a city transportation department ruling that turned down their request to hold the march May 20. Organizers are promising to file a lawsuit if the city rules against them.
Activists were originally granted a permit to hold a parade that Saturday, May 19, to coincide with the G-8 Summit, a meeting of world leaders that is smaller but routinely attracts huge protests.
But when the White House moved that event from Chicago to Camp David, the president's well-guarded retreat near Washington, activists asked to move the march back a day to coincide with the NATO Summit. They wanted the same route running past Daley Plaza, a central gathering spot in the heart of the city's government and business district.
The request was denied by the Chicago Transportation Department's leader.
"The commissioner finds that there are not available at the time of the parade a sufficient number of on-duty police officers, or other city employees authorized to regulate traffic, to police and protect lawful participants in the parade and non-participants," Mike Simon, assistant commissioner of the department, wrote to activist organizer Andy Thayer of the Coalition Against the NATO/G8 War & Poverty Agenda.
City officials said the NATO Summit would be far larger than the G-8 Summit, since more than 50 heads of state and as many as 5,000 NATO delegates are scheduled to attend. City law department spokesman Roderick Drew said traffic issues would be far greater that Sunday, May 20, since dozens of heads of state and their security teams would be using downtown streets.
"Saturday, eight heads of state would have been fine; Sunday with 50 plus is not," he said.
Emanuel supported the decision, saying the route would need to be changed if protesters wanted to march that Sunday.
Activists scoffed at the claims, questioning how the city would have enough officers to handle a march Saturday but not Sunday ? especially since the original parade permit was granted when the city was still scheduled to host back-to-back international summits.
"It defies logic," Thayer said. "Ultimately the city is ... pursuing a political agenda of denying meaningful First Amendment expression of anti-war views."
He said the city's suggested alternative route isn't a solution, largely because it keeps the protesters several blocks away from Daley Plaza. Thayer believes the permit denial was designed to keep the numbers of marchers down. The suggested route is also longer, cutting into time protesters will be allowed to rally outside the convention center where the summit is being held.
He and others also note the city's history dealing with protests, dating back to 1968 when police famously struck protesters with billy clubs during the Democratic National Convention. The city paid more than $6 million this year to settle a lawsuit stemming from the mass arrests made during a protest of the Iraq War in 2003.
The current fights adds up, Thayer contends, to Emanuel's effort to muzzle dissent that started when the mayor proposed increasing the maximum fine for resisting arrest from $200 to $1,000. Ultimately, Emanuel backed down from that plan after City Council members voiced concerns about clamping down on free speech.
Emanuel, Obama's former chief of staff who became Chicago's mayor last year, has repeatedly said he sees no conflict between people's right to express themselves and his responsibility to enforce the law. He has also made clear to Chicagoans and to the White House that his city could handle security for two summits.
Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy agreed. A City Council ordinance pushed through by Emanuel gave McCarthy authority to deputize out-of-state police, but McCarthy said he likely won't have to bring in other officers for the event.
Last week, Emanuel steered clear of suggestions that there weren't enough police to allow the protesters to march the day they're now requesting. Instead, he repeated a familiar refrain that the police department has transferred hundreds of officers from clerical jobs to street duty during his time as mayor.
But the manpower issue is contentious. Many officers are complaining that if McCarthy slashes his budget by $190 million, as he said the mayor has asked him to do, it would mean layoffs in a department already struggling to keep the city safe. That helps explain why the transportation official's letter to Thayer attracted the police officers' union.
"Clearly, the transportation department understands that there is not enough manpower," said Mike Shields, the union president. "At least one hand of the government understands that, while the other hand ? the police department ? is in complete denial about our manpower shortage."

French open probe into gunman's brother
PARIS (AP) ? Signs mounted Sunday that the brother of a radical Islamist gunman who killed schoolchildren and paratroopers in southern France may have helped prepare the attacks.
The Paris prosecutor's office opened a judicial inquiry into whether older brother Abdelkader Merah was complicit in preparing terrorist acts. And a special anti-terrorist judge was expected to file preliminary charges against him later Sunday.
The moves suggest investigators have strong reason to believe that 23-year-old gunman Mohamed Merah was not acting alone when he planned his attacks, which left three Jewish schoolchildren, a rabbi and three paratroopers dead and stunned France.
Merah claimed responsibility for the killings during a standoff with police that ended when he died Thursday in a hail of gunfire as he jumped out a window.
Prosecutor Francois Molins said the inquiry is also looking at anyone else who could have been involved in planning the attacks earlier this month in the city of Toulouse and nearby Montauban.
Investigators are trying to determine what role 30-year-old Abdelkader Merah played in acquiring his younger brother's arsenal and financing his trips to Afghanistan, Pakistan and the Middle East. Mohamed Merah claimed allegiance to al-Qaida and told police he traveled to Afghanistan and Pakistan for training.
Abdelkader is suspected of possible complicity to murder and theft and involvement in a terrorist enterprise, the prosecutor's statement said. Abdelkader was questioned several years ago about alleged links to a network sending Toulouse-area youths to Iraq, but no action was brought against him at the time.
The brother's girlfriend, Yamina Mesbah, was released early Sunday without charge. The Merah brothers' mother was released Friday night, also without charge.
The girlfriend denied any involvement in what happened and said she was shocked by the killings, her lawyer Guy Debuisson said, adding that Abdelkader Merah appeared to have led a double life.
"This woman was unaware of anything about her husband's accessory, complementary or secret life," the lawyer said. The couple married according to Muslim custom in 2006, but did not undergo the civil ceremony required in France for a marriage to be recognized.
Abdelkader Merah took five or six trips to Egypt, ostensibly to study Arabic literature, and his girlfriend joined him on two or three, the lawyer said.
During questioning by police, the lawyer said, Mesbah learned that Merah had had other motivations for his trip to Egypt and "a life that led him toward an extremely intense ... fundamentalism."
"The question to ask today is if Mohamed was the only one that was indoctrinated. Was it just him or are there others," Debuisson asked.
The first paratrooper killed, Imad Ibn Ziaten, was set to be buried Sunday in his hometown in Morocco.
His mother carried his portrait as she disembarked from a plane bearing his coffin that landed late Saturday night at the Moroccan capital, Rabat. The coffin was carried past an honor guard and loaded onto an ambulance to take it to the village of M'diq in the north.
French State Secretary for Defense Marc Laffineur accompanied the family to Morocco, saying he wanted to show that "France is in mourning." The other paratroopers were buried in France last week, and the Jewish children and rabbi were buried in Israel.

ATHENS, Greece (AP) ? Greece's deputy prime minister, who made headlines by saying that ordinary citizens are just as responsible as politicians for his nation's economic crisis, announced Saturday that he will not seek re-election.
An early election is expected in May, and Theodoros Pangalos, 73, a veteran socialist lawmaker, told state TV channel NET he won't compete in it.
He also predicted that his party and the conservative New Democracy, which leads in opinion polls, will both fail to win an outright majority.
True to form, the outspoken Pangalos said he does not think the two coalition partners ? his socialists and the conservatives ? will be able to continue ruling together to pull Greece out of its worst economic crisis in several decades.
"The two biggest parties are proving that they cannot govern together, even if a large portion of the decisions they will have to make is prescribed" by the two loan agreements Greece has signed with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, Pangalos said.
Asked if the politicians whose policies nearly bankrupted the country will manage to take it out of its current predicament, Pangalos said: "Of course not. That's why I am retiring."
Widely known as a brilliant but mercurial man, who clashed with political friends as well as opponents, Pangalos became a lightning rod for disaffected Greeks who have tended to blame politicians for all their woes during the past two years.
"We devoured (the money) together," he had said when the extent of the crisis became apparent, meaning that ordinary citizens as well as politicians were to blame for the profligate state and that many had profited from widespread corruption.
His words caused a huge outcry and are still used against him and politicians in general. Pangalos, who is tall and overweight, has been verbally and physically attacked, with critics throwing yogurt at him in public.
Outwardly, Pangalos has appeared unfazed by the criticism and blamed his critics for undermining democracy. "We live in a state of terror by minorities," Pangalos told NET TV. "The Constitution and several basic laws have, in effect, been abolished."
Pangalos has been a legislator since being elected to Parliament in 1981, and has held many portfolios, including minister of European affairs, transport, the foreign office, and culture.
He became deputy prime minister in the socialist government of George Papandreou in October 2009 and continued in the current governing coalition.

I am contributing to 401k and maxing it out as part of my employer?s retirement plan. The money in the 401k is getting invested in mutual funds. I also plan to open a Roth IRA and would like to put $ 5000 (maximum amount). I have 30 more years to retire. At this point, is it advisable for me to invest the amount in the Roth IRA in mutual funds or in stocks? Best answer:

Initially, I would invest in mutual funds. As your Roth IRA grows (say in five years or so), you might want to invest PART of it in good quality stocks. But stay diversified.

Pope visits heart of conservative Catholic Mexico
SILAO, Mexico (AP) ? The last time a pope visited Mexico, more than 1 million believers cheered and wept in the streets of the capital. Aztec dancers shook rattles and blew conch shells inside the cathedral where John Paul II canonized the first Indian saint in the Americas.
It's been a decade since those ecstatic scenes capped the beloved pope's final trip to the country, and his successor arrives Friday to a much more subdued welcome.
Benedict XVI comes to a church battling to extend its political and social gains while overcoming painful setbacks that include legalized abortion and gay marriage in the capital of the most Catholic country in the Spanish-speaking world. It is also a nation grappling with a rampant drug war that has spread fear into once-tranquil regions such as this state of Guanajuato.
"There is a very immense peace that we need in Mexico because of the insecurity," said Marcela Arguello, a 26-year-old housewife who said she plans to join the throngs along the route of the papal motorcade through the city of Leon, the state's largest city.
Mexico has been traumatized by the deaths of more than 47,000 people in drug-related violence in less than six years, and while sunbaked, rolling Guanajuato is far from the major drug trafficking routes, the shadow of the conflict looms even here.
A recent series of apparently gang-related shootings have left some two dozen people dead in the state, which is noted for leather goods, automotive factories and picturesque tourist towns.
Yet even the drug cartels profess to be people of faith. At least 11 banners signed by the pseudo-religious Knights Templar gang were found in five municipalities of Guanajuato last week, including in Leon, offered peace during the papal trip.
But the mass excitement that greeted the past pope seemed to be missing as well.
By Thursday morning, Leon's Metropolitan Park, where officials are prepared for more than 100,000 campers, was empty apart from the usual joggers and families out for a walk.
Preparations were under way, though: City workers were trimming trees and bushes along the motorcade route, bleachers were going up and a truck rolled past Leon's cathedral spraying insecticide to kill any dengue-carrying mosquitoes.
The airwaves were full of public service announcements urging those attending open-air papal events to dress lightly, wear sunscreen and bring plenty of water. A high of 87 degrees Fahrenheit (31 centigrade) was forecast for Friday.
As many as 300,000 people are expected to gather for Mass Sunday, a large turnout even in a state that is 93.8 percent Catholic, the highest in the country. Guanajuato is also a stronghold of President Felipe Calderon's conservative National Action Party, which has roots in militantly Catholic organizations that formed decades ago to challenge an atheistic federal government.
Guanajuato's constitution declares that life begins at conception and bars abortion with extremely limited exceptions. Seven women were jailed there in 2010 for the deaths of their newborns and later released. The women said they had miscarriages, not abortions.
Benedict's church is encouraging more such laws across the nation, reacting partly to the legalization of gay marriage and abortion in Mexico City, the cultural and political center of the country.
At the same time, the nation's church leaders are fighting to overcome their share of the global child sex-abuse scandal, which destroyed the reputation of the most influential Mexican figure in the church.
The Rev. Marcial Maciel founded the Legionaries of Christ order, which John Paul II praised as a model of rectitude. But a series of investigations forced the order to acknowledge in 2010 that Maciel had sexually abused seminarians and fathered three children. Church documents released in a book this week reveal the Vatican had been told of Maciel's drug abuse and pederasty decades ago.
Setbacks such as the legalization of abortion and gay marriage have spurred the church to take a more active role in public life, said Miguel Bedolla, interim dean of Mexican American Catholic College, an institution affiliated with the Archdiocese of San Antonio, Texas.
"The church thrives when it encounters hardship," he said.
Calderon's government is backing legislation that would end a now-oft-ignored restriction on religious observances in public places, as well as a ban on religious participation in politics.
If approved, it could lay the groundwork for laws allowing church ownership of media and openly religious education on school property, said political analyst John Ackerman, of the legal research institute at Mexico's National Autonomous University.
"This opens the door for the church to start using public spaces," Ackerman said. "It has the full intention to be interpreted as occupying public spaces with religious ceremonies, that's what's on the table."
That builds upon the dramatic changes that John Paul II nurtured during his 26-year papacy, which saw Mexican leaders abandon a series of anti-religion laws so restrictive that the pope was technically breaking the law by wearing clerical garb in public on his first trip.
Benedict will meet with Calderon on Saturday, six days before the start of a presidential campaign that could unseat National Action after 12 years in the country's highest office. The church has repeatedly disavowed any political overtones to the pope's trip, and Calderon's office notes that his invitation to Benedict was first sent in 2007.
John Paul, however, made a point of avoiding visits to countries in the throes of election campaigns to not be seen as giving any political message.
Benedict has emphasized the need for Catholic politicians to stay true to their faith in public life. While he was head of the Vatican's doctrine office in 2003, then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger published a set of guidelines reminding Catholic leaders that the church's longheld opposition to abortion, euthanasia and same-sex marriage weren't up for negotiation.

Throwing Out the Window My ?Parenting Theories? | Mommy Blogs ...
As a young woman and counselor, I had many theories on ?raising kids,? prior to having them.? One of them was if I saw a kid whining at the grocery store and?having a tantrum because he didn?t get what he wanted I would?think (insert smart alecky voice)??Maybe at home he gets what ever he wants and that is why he is having a tantrum right now.?That is why it?s important to set boundaries at home and have consequences for tantrums and whining.?
Some?of these theories came from mere?observation, some were experiences from working with inner city kids and?most were straight out of books.???Little did I?know what I had coming my way.?? After 8 years of marriage, we have a house full of boys!??Three strong and courageous little men that constantly?remind me how little I know about parenting even after reading all those amazing books on ?Child Rearing.?
My first born didn?t really challenge any of my theories, he was straight out of the text kind of kid, ?if you do this?. your child will do this?.?? And the expert advice worked, exactly as I read it in the books.? A dream come true for?a first time mommy. He was very much a happy little?toddler ready to please those around him.? And he still lights up the room when he smiles with that twinkle in his eyes, it brings joy to all.? He has challenged us in a different way though, he has a lot of anxiety and we are learning and?he is learning healthy coping strategies.? It has been quite the journey.? He used to chew up the collar on his shirts til they literally were all stretched out and it looked like I sent him to school with a ?check out my chest hair? shirt.
My second born, Aiden?his name means feisty and passionate.? Needless to say, he?has been a totally different?story than our first born.? He is a lover and our little feisty fighter.? He knows exactly what he wants, he stands up for himself and he speaks his little heart when he is hurt.? He is only 4.? He hugs us fiercely and loves us passionately.? He has challenged all of our discipline, obedience, consequence theories from the very start.? As a toddler, I remember one night when we were saying our prayers it was his turn and he said ?No pray.?? So we asked him to just try to and he didn?t hesitate and he began his prayer??Jesus, I no pray. Thank you fer, mommy and daddy. I no pray????Oh my, I laughed so hard.
Our third born, well he is only 15 months so we are still discovering his little personality.? He?fills my day with?sunshine, kisses and?stinky diapers. He is a content and happy baby for the most part.??He?is quite expressive see for yourself in the picture above.? This was all in a matter of 5 minutes while I was feeding him dinner.?Yes, just in case you are?wondering, that is food hanging off his lip in the second row picture. ?He definitely keeps us laughing.
As you find yourself overwhelmed because your theories and practices aren?t working seek Him for wisdom and remember as parents we are students.? Each child is uniquely and wonderfully made!? Their little personalities sometimes require tailored consequences and practices.? My potty training worked amazing with one of our boys but it was a disaster for our other son.? I am realizing that I really need to become a student of my children, constantly learning and figuring out how to raise them.?
